“Le Pépitier” struck again – interview with Devotion

(FR) En créant des morceaux d’une atmosphère euphorique profonde et forts en émotions, Devotion s’est vu attribuer le surnom de « Pépitier » par la communauté Twitch de Damien RK. Après avoir signé ses titres sur l’un des sous labels de Scantraxx, puis chez Akkros Records, Devotion a récemment sorti Reborn sur le label Hardstyle France Records. C’est à cette occasion qu’il a bien voulu nous en dire un peu plus sur sa vision de la Hard Music.
(EN) It’s by creating tracks charged with a deep euphoric atmosphere and intense emotions that Devotion was given the nickname “Pépitier” [Editor’s note: pun to suggest he creates gold nuggets] by Damien RK’s Twitch community. After first releasing his tracks with one of the sublabels of Scantraxx and then with Akkros Records, Devotion recently released Reborn in association with the label Hardstyle France Records. On that occasion, he has agreed to share his vision on Hard Music.
(FR) 1- Tout d’abord, merci d’avoir accepté notre interview. Pourrais-tu présenter ton parcours aux personnes qui ne te connaissent pas encore ?
Je m’appelle Alexandre, je suis originaire de Lorraine et je compose du Hardstyle depuis 2010. Quatre ans plus tard j’ai lancé le projet Devotion et rejoint en 2015 le sous label de Scantraxx, X-Bone Records, chez qui je suis resté pendant trois ans. Début 2019, j’ai fondé le label Akkros Records, en lien avec l’association d’évènements Akkros, que j’avais rejoint en tant que DJ en 2012.
(EN) 1- First of all, we’d like to thank you for your time. Could you tell us a little bit about your career for those who don’t know you yet?
My name is Alexandre, I’m from Lorraine [Editor’s Note: a Northeast region of France] and I have been a Hardstyle composer since 2010. Four years later, I started my project Devotion and I joined in 2015 the label X-Bone Records for three years. In the beginning of 2019, I founded the label Akkros Records, in partnership with the event society Akkros (which I had joined as a DJ in 2012.)
(FR) 2- Comment décrirais-tu ton univers musical et quelles sont tes inspirations lorsque tu crées ?
Ma musique représente mon âme. J’essaye d’y exprimer mes ressentis, comme dans Reborn ou Save Me, ou un thème précis, telle que l’ambiance retrowave qu’on retrouve dans Won’t Remember Me ou encore de rendre hommage et mettre en avant notre magnifique planète bleue dans Earth. Quel que soit le thème abordé, la musicalité et l’émotion seront les deux impératifs. Je m’efforce aussi d’apporter une touche très personnelle dans le sound design, intégrer ma signature pour permettre à la personne qui écoute le morceau de se dire « ça, c’est du Devotion ! ».
(EN) 2- How would you describe your musical universe and what inspires you when you create music?
My music is a mirror to my soul. I’m trying to express my perception of things (just like with my tracks Reborn or Save Me) or I try to talk about a specific theme, such as this retro wave feel that can be found in Won’t Remember Me or then again I want to take a moment to honor and put forth our wonderful blue planet, with my track Earth. Whatever the theme addressed, musicality and emotion will always be the key components. I always try to bring a very personal touch in sound design, to which I add my own trademark. That’s a crucial element as it allows the person listening to the track to be able to say “Oh! That’s a Devotion track, without a doubt!”.
(FR) 3- Tu as récemment sorti Reborn chez Hardstyle France Records, peux-tu nous parler de ce titre très personnel ?
Effectivement. Ce morceau parle de mon histoire et de la manière dont je suis sorti d’une période très sombre de ma vie. C’est un véritable plaisir d’avoir pu signer ce titre sur ce label car j’apprécie beaucoup la démarche ainsi que les personnes qui en sont à la tête.
(EN) 3- You’ve recently release Reborn under Hardstyle France Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this particularly personal track?
I sure can. This track talks about my history and the way I could get out of a very dark period of my life. It has been a real pleasure to release this track with Hardstyle France Records because I very much appreciate their approach and most of all, the people running it.
(FR) 4- Quel est le meilleur conseil qu’on ait pu te donner dans ce milieu ?
Je ne sais pas si c’est un conseil, mais une décision m’a inspiré. En 2018 mon ami X-Pander a quitté l’univers Hardstyle pour produire du Hardcore car c’est ce dont il avait envie et il s’est complètement épanoui musicalement parlant. Cela m’a ouvert les yeux sur le fait de ne plus me plier aux exigences de certains managers et de me faire kiffer à 100%. Je dois avouer que je n’ai jamais été aussi productif.
J’aimerais aussi citer Damien RK, qui m’a redonné beaucoup de confiance par rapport à ma musique et qui me conseille au quotidien grâce à son expérience. Cependant, cela restera entre lui et moi.
(EN) 4- What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
I don’t know if that’s any kind of piece of advice, still, that’s one decision that inspired me. In 2018, my friend X-Pander left the Hardstyle universe to start producing Hardcore, which was something he wanted to do and he’s been totally musically fulfilled ever since. My friend’s decision made me realize that I didn’t have to comply with some managers’ demands and that I could just enjoy myself all the way. And I’ve got to admit, I have never been so productive in my whole life.
I’d also like to quote Damien RK, who has been here for me to boost my self-confidence regarding my music, and he gives me many pieces of advice on a daily basis based upon his own experience. Nevertheless, it will stay between him and me.
(FR) 5- Si tu pouvais changer quoi que ce soit dans l’industrie de la Hard Music en France, qu’est-ce que ce serait ?
La jalousie. Beaucoup d’acteurs font état de jalousie qui débouche sur des critiques négatives et des volontés de nuire. Cependant, le confinement a su rapprocher beaucoup d’entre nous, je dirais même la majorité. Que ce soit DJ, compositeurs, acteurs de l’événementiel, les mentalités changent progressivement. Ce que je peux dire c’est que je ne prête pas attention aux personnes nuisibles. Je me fais kiffer, c’est le plus important pour moi.
(EN) 5- If you could change anything within the Hard Electronic Music Industry in France, what would it be?
Jealousy. Many players in the industry state that jealousy often results in negative criticism and attempts to harm others. On the other hand, the lockdown brought many people together, and I’d even go as far as to say the majority. Whether it be DJs, composers, people working in the music industry overall, and so on, I believe mentalities are slowly changing. All I can say is that, I don’t pay any attention to injurious people. I like what I’m doing, and that’s what’s most important to me.
(FR) 6- Tu as déjà plusieurs collaborations à ton actif, mais avec quel artiste rêverais-tu de travailler ?
C’est une question tellement compliquée. La collaboration de mes rêves serait avec Hans Zimmer. Cet artiste me touche énormément et ça pourrait être dingue de mêler nos deux genres ! Si je ne devais citer qu’un artiste de la Hard Music, ce serait Aftershock. Je l’aime trop ! (ses yeux s’illuminent)
(EN) 6- You’ve already collaborated with many artists, but who would you dream to collaborate with?
That’s a tough question. I think my dream collab would be one with Hans Zimmer. This artists moves me tremendously and I think it could be pretty wild to intertwine our two genres! Although, if I had to choose someone within the Hard Music industry, I’d have to go with Aftershock, I just love that guy! (his eyes sparkle)
(FR) 7- Enfin, peux-tu nous parler de tes projets à venir ?
Concernant le futur, deux titres sont planifiés chez Akkros Records : Miracles, en collaboration avec AZGVRD, prévu pour décembre, et Global Consciousness, prévu pour janvier. Je travaille également en collaboration avec Fury sur le morceau Dope Boy que nous espérons finir très rapidement pour la proposer chez Hardstyle France Records.
Etant donné l’actualité sanitaire, je n’ai pas de soirée prévue, cependant, je suis régulièrement invité sur des lives Twitch. Le prochain sera en novembre sur la chaîne de Mad Moon Event.
(EN) 7- Finally, could you tell us about your upcoming news and projects?
About future projects, I have two new tracks scheduled with Akkros Records: Miracles (in collaboration with AZGVRD) planned for December and Global Consciousness planned for January. In addition, I’m working on a track entitled Dope Boy, in collaboration with Fury. We hope to finish it soon enough in order to present it to Hardstyle France Records.
Because of the current health situation, I obviously don’t have any event scheduled so far. However, I’m often invited on Twitch for live streams. The next one will be in November on Mad Moon Event‘s channel.
